The City of York’s contract for removing and disposing of residential and commercial refuse with Republic Services will end on April 30, 2025.
Working since July of 2024, the York City Public Works Department has attempted to seek proposals three times. Due to the nature of hauling refuse in all cities, such as navigating alleyways and traffic, hauling cans and bags between parked cars, and the huge amount of waste that must be collected, finding a garbage hauler to service the city has been challenging. After three attempts, the City of York received an acceptable bid. The new hauler is ESC Management Services LLC (formerly known as Good’s Disposal Service). The new contract will begin on May 1, 2025
As part of our new upcoming refuse collection service, the collection of recycling on Mondays and Tuesdays has been evaluated and found that these are the heavier trash collection days as we are coming off the weekend. Since trash collection later in the week is much lighter, moving the collection of recycling later in the week will benefit the scheduling of the new contract and will also help to reduce the refuse-truck traffic in the City on Mondays and Tuesdays.
Effective May 1, 2025, the new recycling schedule will now be Thursdays and Fridays for collection. For instance, if your recycling day is currently Monday, your recycling will now be picked up on Thursday. If your recycling day is currently Tuesday, your recycling will now be picked up on Friday. Yard waste will not be affected by this change and will remain on the normal schedule of Monday and Tuesday for collection.
In addition, a new Hybrid Collection Service Program utilizes semi-automated service trucks for efficient pick-up operations and is being implemented in the following refuse districts: Fireside, Colony Park, Springdale and the Avenues. Customers in these districts will have new toter trash cans delivered at their normal trash pick-up area this week, which will need to be used for trash collection beginning May 1, 2025. The Hybrid Collection Service Program is routed in refuse districts with sufficient space to accommodate the movement of the specialized trucks.
A new online service is available for the scheduling of large items to be collected and the reporting of missed collections.
