Yard Waste Collection and Information

Yard waste is collected curbside March 1 - December 15 each year

The City of York reminds customers that yard waste is collected weekly on the normal recycling day in each district. Collections occur each recycling day from March through mid December. The City does not accept PLASTIC BAGS or GRASS for yard waste collection. Customers may use biodegradable Kraft Paper Bags. The paper bags are composted with the yard waste. Customers may also use the yellow yard waste cans or bundle brush with twine. (As of 2004, clear plastic yard waste bags and grass clippings were banned from yard waste programs all over York County.)

Yard Waste must be properly prepared using the following options:

  1. Authorized Yellow Yard Waste Can
  2. Biodegradable Kraft Paper Bags
  3. Bundle Brush with twine (Do not use wire)

Yardwaste Cans - $3.00/can (limit 1)

Biodegradable Kraft Paper Bags - $5.00/bundle of ten (10) bags

Accepted forms of payment - cash or check ONLY. Credit or debit cards will not be accepted. (Must show proof of customer status or residency, such as a driver's license or sewer bill.)

Yardwaste Cans and Biodegradable Kraft Paper Bags can be purchased at the Public Works Office at 101 South George St.; Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

Biodegradable Kraft Paper Bags may also be purchased at City Hall, 101 South George St., Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.

Other kraft paper leaf bags (Max: 32 gallons) may be used and are sold at comparable prices in packs of 5 bags each, at a variety of stores such as Walmart, and Target.

Brush/Branches (Less than 4” diameter)

Bundle with twine (Bundle Max: 3’ x 3’ and 40 pounds)
Use authorized yellow cans (Max: 40 pounds)

Leaves/Prunings/Garden Residue

Use authorized yellow cans (Max: 32 gallons and 40 pounds, OR use biodegradable kraft bags).

“YARD WASTE” consists of vegetative material, such as leaves, weeds, flowers, hedge trimmings, and the like.
DO NOT include dirt/soil with yard waste. Dirt/soil must be handled privately.

DO NOT include grass clippings with yard waste.
Grass should be left on lawns or, if raking is necessary, bag grass with regular trash.
Yard waste must be kept separate from regular trash.
 

(Note: Yard waste is not collected during the winter from December 16 - February 29)

Place yard waste at designated pick-up point by 6 a.m. on your normal recycling day each week.

Yard waste must be clean (no grass, dirt/soil, trash, diapers, pizza boxes, animal waste, etc.)

Yard waste must be bundled with twine or placed in authorized yellow cans or biodegradable kraft paper bags.

Place yard waste loose in yard waste cans. Do not use bags to line yard waste cans

Customers may lease one (1) yard waste can per household for $3. The City reserves the right to confiscate any authorized containers that are used for materials other than yard waste or that are found outside the City limits. No refunds will be given.

Yard Waste Drop-off Site

Unless otherwise publicized, the yard waste facility at Memorial Stadium is opened on the first Saturday of each month (April - December) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., weather permitting. However, in the case of a holiday, the schedule may vary. (No person shall dispose of any material, except during posted hours of operation! Violators will be prosecuted as per Ordinance #952.) (The yard waste facility usually does not open in January, February, and March).
