Smoke Detectors Save Lives
The Fire Prevention Bureau of the York City Department of Fire/Rescue Services offers free smoke detectors and batteries to City residents in partnership with the American Red Cross through Lowe's Store 415 of York, ABC 27 News and the Juvenile Fire Center Program of South Central Pennsylvania.
To obtain a free smoke detector or batteries call the Fire Prevention Bureau at 854-3921 during business hours, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
The Fire Prevention Bureau also encourages members of the public from other municipalities to contact their local fire departments regarding smoke detector safety.
The York City Department of Fire/Rescue Services recommends the following:
- Remember to check the batteries in your smoke alarms. Smoke alarm batteries need to be changed at least twice a year.
- And once you've changed the batteries, be sure to test the alarms on a monthly basis.
- Install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home, outside every room that's used for sleeping purposes and inside every room that's used for sleeping purposes.
- Keep smoke alarms clean by vacuuming over and around them regularly.
- As with any appliance, smoke alarms wear out. Replace the entire unit after 10 years or as recommended by the manufacturer.
- Make sure you know where the local fire department, police station and hospital are and post a list of emergency phone numbers near all the telephones in your home.
- Organize and practice a family fire drill.
The York City Department of Fire/Rescue Services also reminds the public to practice holiday safety and home heating safety. For more information click here.
