Background
Renee S. Nelson, a former York City School Board Director, was elected to York City Council in November 2009 and was sworn into office on January 4, 2010. Renee serves as the Chair of the Economic & Community Development Committee of Council and is a member of the Police, Fire, and Rules & Administrative Code Committees. She has served as Council's liaison to the City/School District Cooperation & Open Communications Committee since January 2010. Renee was the former Chair of the Police and Fire Committes, and former member of the Public Works and Business Administration Committees.
Renee, a proud, full-time mother of two daughters, is employed as a dental assistant/receptionist while working her way through college where she hopes to earn a teaching degree. She is actively involved with the Girl Scouts of America and Habitat for Humanity. Renee said she believes in the goals of the Girl Scouts, which aims to empower girls and help teach values such as honesty, fairness, courage, compassion, sisterhood, and confidence. Additionally, she became a volunteer member of Habitat for Humanity as she supports its mission of "simple, decent, and affordable" housing by eliminating blighted homes and homelessness to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
With a history of public service, Renee has confronted tough challenges in managing and balancing budgets, and determining and establishing policies affecting both the education system and municipal government. She is a strong proponent of education and believes education is the force that drives success.
