Renee S. Nelson, a former York City School Board Director, was first elected to York City Council in November 2009 and after winning re-election in November 2013, was again sworn into office on January 6, 2014 for a term of four years. Renee serves as the Chair of the Economic & Community Development Committee of Council and is a member of the Public Works, and Rules & Administrative Code Committees of Council.
Renee, a proud, full-time mother of two daughters, is employed as a dental assistant/receptionist while working her way through college where she hopes to earn a teaching degree. She is actively involved with the Girl Scouts of America and Habitat for Humanity. Renee said she believes in the goals of the Girl Scouts, which aims to empower girls and help teach values such as honesty, fairness, courage, compassion, sisterhood, and confidence. Additionally, she became a volunteer member of Habitat for Humanity as she supports its mission of "simple, decent, and affordable" housing by eliminating blighted homes and homelessness to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action.
With a history of public service, Renee has confronted tough challenges in managing and balancing budgets, and determining and establishing policies affecting both the education system and municipal government. She is a strong proponent of education and believes education is the force that drives success.
