Market Street Garage Project

At over forty years old, the Market Street Garage is the oldest parking garage in the City of York. It was built in 1968 with seven split-level floors plus two sub-levels. The garage proved to be a valuable asset for the City. The heavy usage has taken its toll and the appearance has become dated.

In 2003 the City of York General Authority (the owner of the garage) decided it was time to seriously consider the condition and the life expectancy of the building. Carl Walker was retained to perform an in depth study. In 2006 their recommendations were given to the General Authority. Carl Walker concluded that the Market Street Garage structure is sound and that with some renovations and repair it will serve the parking needs of the public for decades to come. It was agreed that the recommended repairs were necessary and with the recent resurgence in downtown York, the renovations were needed to bring new life to the facility.

The renovations will include:

  • Structural Repairs
  • Reconfiguration of Entrance & Exit Ramps
  • New Lighting
  • New Elevator
  • New Stair Tower
  • Additional Stair Tower
  • Relocation of Cashier Booth
  • Security Enhancements
  • New Ventilation Equipment
  • New Façade

On Monday, March 23, 2009 the initial preparation to begin work was started. All customers with reserved parking in the lowest level of the garage were notified and moved to other areas allowing the contractors to occupy the entire SA level.

The construction is expected to last 15 months. During this time the entrance to the garage will be limited to east bound traffic on Market Street. The entrance lane heading west from Duke Street will be closed.
